After assessing our own criteria and Mexico City's current situation, we have created and selected a few solutions of our own to present.
Replacing some fossil fuel plants with sources that produce renewable energy
Fossil fuel energy in Mexico city form up to 89% of the total energy produced. While this shows that it is very important to the city, it also shows how much of a toll it takes on Mexico city's air. Fossil fuels can be replaced with a plethora of different renewable energy sources. Wind farms, in particular, are particular viable due to Mexico city's high altitude. It's high altitude means that much more wind flows through the region, and can be easily taken advantage of. These can be installed above the mountains to avoid the windbreak that affects Mexico city. Solar energy is also an option, and works fairly well also due to Mexico city's high altitude and location close to the equator.
Implementation of the EERC's air pollution control device; the Advanced hybrid ™ Filter Technology.
This piece of technology created by the energy & environmental research center is an emission control device that filters particulate matter and captures valuable gases in the process. This technology can be used in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, and can be used in fossil fuel power plants. The machine collects 99.99% of all particle matter, making in an extremely efficient way to reduce emissions from manufacturing machines. The machine's costs are currently however unknown, however the effects are clearly extremely beneficial for the environment. The machine is currently in use at 50-megawatt power plant in china.
Regulate and Enforce harsher standards for heavy emission vehicles
The Mexican government has been successful in regulating emissions from private vehicles, however they can further reduce the air pollution by enforcing harsher regulations on vehicles that have the heavier impacts on the air quality such as diesel using trucks and buses. These heavy emission vehicles produce a large amount of particulate matter 2.5 and 10 and by enforcing harsher standards, the government will be able to reduce the emission levels of these vehicles.
Providing a better Public Transport Network with incentives
The Mexican government can also improve the way that their public transport network runs. By providing the general public with faster and cheaper ways of getting around the city, this will in turn encourage them to use their automobiles less, thus in the long run reducing the amount of pollutants that are released into the atmosphere. The government can also provide some different incentives for those who use public transport, giving the public even more of a reason to use public transport. Incentives could include: a lowering of tax that they receive every year and also provide discounts for those who use the network regularly.
